ACSO Deputies Placed on Administrative Leave After Shooting of Armed Suspect in Hamilton County
HAMILTON, Fla. The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) has announced that a member of the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) swat team shot and killed an armed suspect and that multiple involved deputies have been placed on administrative leave.
HCSO said in their Facebook post that last week they requested assistance from ACSO in serving a domestic violence injunction and an Ex Parte Risk Protection Order (RPO) on Joseph A. Ogle. An RPO was placed on Ogle by the Hamilton County court due to him being in possession of several firearms and explosives and having placed fortifications around his residence. Ogle was a veteran with training and experience with weapons and firearms. The RPO would’ve allowed Ogle to be placed in temporary custody due to it being determined that he posed a threat to himself or others.
HCSO and ACSO found probable cause for criminal charges on Ogle and he was served a warrant for Written or Electronic Threats to Kill, do Bodily Injury or Conduct a Mass Shooting or Act of Terrorism.
Wednesday morning, HCSO, ACSO, along with the Jacksonville County Sheriff’s Office went to serve Ogle's warrant and surrounded his house.
HCSO’s post states, “After lengthy negotiations, the suspect started firing at law enforcement personnel and their assets. He told law enforcement he would continue shooting and would commit suicide if necessary. During the subsequent standoff, the suspect presented himself armed with a handgun. At approximately 10:45 am, the suspect was shot by a member of ACSO’s SWAT team and was pronounced dead on scene.”
Per ACSO’s policy on officer-involved shootings, several involved ACSO deputies have been placed on administrative leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) investigates the events leading up to Ogle’s killing. The ACSO Office of Professional Standards will investigate if ACSO policies were followed.
HCSO Sheriff J. Harrell Reid thanked ACSO Sheriff Emery Gainey for ACSO’s involvement.
HCSO ended their post stating no further information would be released until investigations are completed.
