Convicted Felon Breaks in Woman’s House; Flees After Warning Shot
George Edward Dampier, 50, was arrested on Friday and charged with burglary, property damage, smuggling a firearm into jail, and possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.
Dampier was arguing with the victim at her residence, and he left.
Dampier returned and demanded the victim give him a watch he left at the residence. The victim didn’t know what he was talking about.
Dampier walked onto the victim’s front porch and kicked her door open, causing $200 in damage.
Fearing for her and her child’s lives, the victim grabbed a .380 caliber Glock pistol and fired a single warning shot into the ground. Dampier fled the scene with the victim’s neighbor but was located by police shortly after.
An Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) deputy searched Dampier and found multiple knives. However, the deputy did not find the brass Derringer-size antique black powder pistol that was tucked in a pocket in Dampier’s bag. The gun was found when Dampier was searched at the jail.
In 2019, Dampier was charged with dating violence via sworn complaint, but the charges were never formally filed, and he wasn’t arrested in this case. The victim reported that Dampier had choked her and said he wanted to “burn [the victim’s] house down with her and her young children inside.”
Dampier was convicted of felony grand theft in 2006.
The State Attorney’s Office has filed a pretrial detention motion on Dampier.
