Elderly Man Arrested Battery on an Elderly Person

William Lee Smith, 68, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with battery on an elderly person. 

Smith reportedly pushed the victim during an argument. The victim then walked into the kitchen to make a phone call, and Smith snatched her phone from her hands. 

Smith told police the argument was verbal. 

Gainesville Police Department Officer Mateo Rico reported that Smith “admitted to taking the phone from the victim because he thought [she] was talking to another man.”

Smith told Rico he “quickly gave the phone back to the victim."

Smith was released on recognizance.
