Gainesville Man Arrested for Two Sexual Assault Counts Held in Pretrial Detention

Police arrested Alex Lewis Smith, 48, last week on a warrant charging him with two counts of sexual assault.
The sworn complaint states the victim told two witnesses that Smith had been raping her repeatedly since she was 12 years old.
The victim kept a diary to track when Smith would sexually abuse her, and she documented at least 60 instances. She told police that she had repeatedly told Smith to stop and tried to fight him off, but he continued to abuse her.
One of the witnesses told police she saw Smith leaving the victim's room at night on three occasions in 2024.
The State Attorney's Office filed a pretrial detention motion on Smith, which was granted Thursday by Judge David Kreider.
