On Tuesday, police arrested Theodore Nathaniel Johnson, 29, and charged him with simple assault.

Johnson reportedly threatened to “beat the victim’s ass” while they were in the kitchen. Johnson reportedly stood one foot away from the victim with his hand extending towards her face.

Gainesville Police Department (GPD) Officer Aaron Stemen reported that Johnson has a history of domestic violence.

The victim left the apartment due to Johnson’s threats and waited for police in the cold. Stemen reported that Johnson sent the victim “ambiguous text messages alluding to him harming her when she returned.”

The victim became nervous when Stemen said police would be speaking with Johnson. Stemen said they had to in spite of her concern due to it being a domestic incident.

Johnson told police he “didn’t know what he said” during the argument but didn’t deny threatening the victim. Johnson reportedly claimed to “not understand his rights” after he was read his Miranda Rights.

Johnson was released on a $5,000 bond and has been ordered to not contact the victim or possess any weapons.
