Gainesville Man Posts Bond After Child Abuse and Battery Arrest

Marquis Lavar Stokes, 47, was arrested Thursday night and charged with child cruelty and domestic battery by strangulation.

The victim told a school resource officer that Stokes beat her the night before. 

The victim had run away from Stokes because of his abusive behavior.

Stokes pursued the victim and physically battered her, threatening to kill her while committing the battery. 

Stokes kidnapped the victim, taking her back to his residence. Stokes continually beat the victim while taking her back. 

Stokes verbally abused the victim, making multiple vulgar threats toward her once back at the residence. 

Stokes was released on a $50,000 bond. 

Stokes has been ordered to not possess any weapons, not contact the victim and not have unsupervised contact with minors.
