Man Convicted in Alachua County Courts for Possessing Child Sexual Abuse Material; Minor Discrepancy in GPD’s Press Release

Update: The discrepancy in the number of charges listed was simply a typo by GPD and the press release will be updated

On October 23, Matthew Johnson, 26, was sentenced to three years in prison followed by two years of sex offender probation in a plea deal where he was adjudicated guilty on nine counts of possessing child sexual abuse material and one count of using a two-way communication device to facilitate a felony.

The Gainesville Police Department (GPD) reported on Facebook Friday that Johnson lied by saying he “blacked out” and didn’t remember committing the crime. Johnson would later admit that he did remember looking at the abusive videos and saved the videos to his account.

GPD acknowledged that Johnson’s sentencing stemmed from the ten aforementioned crimes he was charged with in August 2023. However, GPD also said that Johnson’s sentence was “based on 11 counts of child exploitation offenses that Johnson was charged with.”
