Routine Traffic Stop Leads to Rape Threats Against ACSO Deputy

Archer man Kevin Michael Kortright, 48, was arrested in Gainesville on August 9 after a routine traffic stop for speeding by an Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) deputy led to the officer being threatened with rape.

According to the deputy’s speedometer, which was last calibrated in April, Kortright was driving 68 miles per hour (mph) in a 45 mph zone on SW 13th & St SW Williston Rd.

After reportedly weaving through traffic, Kortright was stopped on SW 18th St & SW Williston Rd.

The arrest report states the deputy “called the driver [Kortright] out of the vehicle per ASO policy.”

Kortright was reportedly verbally hostile throughout the entire traffic stop but did provide his license. After Kortright handed the deputy his license he was told to stop standing in the middle of the road and in between his headlights.

The deputy reported that Kortright took a picture of his license plate number, and he was asked to step back to the front of the his vehicle. After Kortright was warned he’d be tased, he walked to the front of the vehicle.

Kortright then reportedly made steps toward the deputy and was warned he’d be placed in handcuffs, causing him to step back.

Shortly after backup arrived, the deputy was issuing the citations, and Kortright reportedly took steps toward the assisting officer.

The deputy reported that Kortright did not comply with commands to move and pulled away his wrist when the deputy went to place him in handcuffs. He was subsequently detained in handcuffs using a modified arm-bar takedown.

While in the patrol vehicle, Kortright somehow managed to escape from his handcuffs and proceeded to bang his head and fists into the plexiglass divider between him and the deputy.

The deputy reported he checked the handcuffs for “proper fit” and they were “double locked.”

Kortright picked up a riot shield in the backseat of the patrol car and slammed it on the divider, breaking the shield.

The deputy wrote in the arrest report, “The defendant repeatedly made threats to sue me and find my address, which he stated was ‘on public record’ and rape me, my wife, and children.”

Kortright was charged with resisting an officer without violence, prisoner escape, property damage, and threatening a public servant.

The Deputy reported, “The defendant willfully and repeatedly refused numerous lawful commands from multiple deputies in the performance of their duties. After being placed under arrest, the defendant escaped from restraints while being transported to a detention facility, then intentionally and maliciously damaged law enforcement equipment valued at $250. After being placed under arrest, the defendant repeatedly made violent threats to me and my family members with the intent to release him from custody.”

Kortright was admitted to a hospital the day after his arrest and was booked into jail on August 14.

Kortright is eligible for a bond of $250,000.

Kortright has pending civil traffic violations for speeding, not having proof of insurance, and failing to display his registration.
